If you struggle with offering enough time and energy to new hires on their first day of work, consider starting them on a Friday. That’s what Spredfast, a social media marketing agency, does, and they’ve found it improved the onboarding process:
- The new hire and existing employees are less stressed. Mondays are challenging for most. Hosting an onboarding event at the end of the week takes the edge off and leaves both existing employees and new hires more excited about the work they’ll tackle the following week.
- New hires come in fresh. When people start jobs on a Friday, they’ve had at least a week break from their previous job. That respite leaves the employee more refreshed than the usual weekend-long transition would.
- It leaves people more motivated. "When they go out that weekend and people ask about their new job, they can instantly explain who we are and what we do, and the excitement of having a new job will feel fresh," says Sam Barber, VP of talent development at Spredfast. "This energy is also helpful because we offer an incentive referral bonus."
- The process builds cross-functional relationships. At Spredfast, onboarding takes place in small groups in a relaxed setting. This helps employees and new hires see each other for more than their roles.
- It reinforces company culture. "We want our team to have ongoing relationships with the people they meet during their orientation," says Baber. "We think it helps make them successful. For us, it’s all about fostering community from day one."
